Chivas USA selected Paul Islas from Fresno Pacific University in the MLS Supplemental Draft on Tuesday morning as the only forward selected in the draft.
“I was watching the live feed and the draft tracker on the website and it was having trouble loading up,” said Islas to FPUathletics.com. “I started getting all these texts saying congratulations and I had no idea what they were talking about until someone finally said I got drafted by Chivas USA.”
In 2012, Islas played in 19 games (18 starts), scoring 22 goals and adding 12 assists, a collegiate personal best. In his four years at Fresno Pacific, the Fresno native disputed a total of 69 games (64 starts), scored a total of 55 goals, and sums 33 assists.
In the match below, Islas scored two goals for Fresno, helping the team earn a spot in the NCCAA West Finals:
Chivas USA announced today the acquisition of midfielder Eric Avila in exchange for Nick LaBrocca. Avila joined the Goats for the start of training camp last Friday and has since been training with the club.
Although young, Avila brings vast experience to Chivas USA, spending four seasons with FC Dallas (2008-2011) and two with Toronto FC (2011-2012), playing a total of 96 games (33 starts), notching five goals and adding 11 assists to his career. With Ryan Smith no longer with the club, Avila will be fighting for a spot in the midfield against Frenchman Laurent Courtois.
Avila is not a stranger to The Home Depot Center; he joined Chivas USA’s U19 squad back in 2005 before he enrolled in UC Santa Barbara. In his first year with the Gauchos, Avila helped UCSB win their first national after scoring the game-winning goal in the Division I National Championship match.
With Chivas USA, fans can expect Avila to score at least one goal; the San Diego native has scored one goal every year since 2009. How many goals will he score with the Red-and-White in 2013?
First up in the MLS Supplemental Draft, Chivas USA selected Jose Diaz as the second overall pick of Tuesday’s draft. FutbolMLS.com’s Diego Pinzon spoke with Chivas USA’s head coach Jose Luis Sanchez Solá about the team’s philosophy that the Red-and-White will have in this new era and about Juan Agudelo’s possible European transfer. Watch the first part of the interview below (English subtitles included):
Diego Pinzón de FutbolMLS.com habló con el director técnico de Chivas USA Jose Luis Sánchez Solá sobre la filosofía que tendrán los rojiblancos en esta nueva era y la posible salida del delantero Juan Agudelo. Vea la primera parte de la entrevista:
It was a hard-fought match as Chivas USA’s sister club, Chivas de Guadalajara came to a 1-1 draw with Cruz Azul on Sunday evening in Estadio Omnilife in their third match of the 2013 Clausura tournament in Liga MX. The visiting team finished the match with nine players on the pitch, after two Cruz Azul players received a second yellow card, leading to their ejections. With the draw, Chivas sits in the 13th spot in the general standings and has yet to win their first match of the season.
Guadalajara opened up the match maintaining most of the possession and having the better chances at goal, but it was Cruz Azul’s Javier Orozco who notched the first goal of the match in the 31st minute. Just before halftime, Chivas forward Rafael Marquez Lugo dropped a ball with his chest with his back to goal and did a half turn to notch the equalizing goal in the 40th minute. The draw marked yet another unsuccessful year for Cruz Azul in Guadalajara, since the team has not defeated Chivas in Guadalajara since 2009.
The Mexican Goats will now prepare for their next match visiting Monarcas Morelia, who took a 2-1 victory in their last match. Morelia currently sits in ninth place in the standings with a 1-1-1 record.
Check out Marquez Lugo’s equalizing goal:
Last season was challenging for Chivas USA, but above all, there were three moments of 2012 that are up for the L.A. Sports Awards. Below are the nominated moments:
-Chivas USA earned their first win of the season on away turf. On March 24, the Red-and-White travelled to Utah to face Real Salt Lake in the third match of the season. In the 72nd minute of the match, defender Ante Jazic made a cross that RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando attempted to grab but let go, allowing Townsend to score his first professional and winning goal of the match.
-A goal from Jose Correa in the first SuperClasico of 2012 gave the Red-and-White their first victory against the LA Galaxy since 2007. The goal came in the second half of the match after former Chivas USA defender David Junior Lopes stopped a ball with his arm, resulting in a penalty, and the win for the Goats.
-The Red-and-White ended the 2012 season on a high note. What seemed to be a 2-nil win for FC Dallas on Oct. 28, 2012, Chivas USA made a dramatic turnaround, earning a draw in the dying minutes of the match. Laurent Courtois notched the first goal for the Goats in the 90th minute of the match, ten minutes after coming in to the game as a sub. In the 93rd minute, Juan Agudelo was able to get the second goal for the Goats, and the final 2-2 draw.
